EU roaming charges to be cut by more than half since July

BC, Riga, 25.06.2014.Print version
Starting July 1, 2014, data roaming tariffs in the European Union (EU) will be reduced by more than half, but the cost of making and receiving calls in the EU will be 21% lower, the European Commission's report indicates, cites LETA.

The current price cap will be cut down by more than half – from 45 cents to 20 cents per megabyte. Phone calls and text messages will also become cheaper, the commission said.

The cost of making calls will be 21% cheaper, but the cost of receiving calls and sending text messages will be lower by 28.5% and 25% respectively.

European mobile service providers will begin to offer their clients a special roaming agreement before they travel or, if possible, allow them to choose a local mobile provider for data services.

Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for Digital Agenda, admitted that roaming tariffs are obsolete in a single market. "By the end of this year I hope we see the complete end of roaming charges agreed," Kroes said in a statement. "The Parliament has done their part, now it is up to Member States to seal the deal," she said.

As compared to 2007, data roaming costs in 2014 are 80-90% lower at the moment.
