Skonto repays its debt and permitted to participate in Latvian Football League

Latvia's top football club Riga Skonto has repaid its debt to the Latvian Football League (LFF) and will be permitted to remain in the competition, LFF spokesman Emils Latkovskis confirmed to LETA.

"The club has paid off all of its debts and will be able to continue playing in the LFF," Latkovskis said, adding that he hopes the club will also take care of its debt to its current and former players, as well as to the State Revenue Service.

As reported, this past March, two of Latvia's top football clubs – Riga Skonto and Daugavpils Daugava, were not granted licenses to play in the Latvian Football League this season.

However, later both clubs won their appeals and were granted an extension to sort out their problems.

Skonto, which finished second in the Latvian Football League last season, was initially not granted a license due to its tax debt, while Daugava, which finished third last season, was not granted a license as it has not established a youth academy, which is necessary to play in the league.

Skonto is the most successful club in Latvian football history, winning the Latvian Football League each year from 1992 to 2004, as well as in 2010.

Meanwhile, "Daugava" triumphed in the Latvian Football League in 2013.

The new Latvian Football League season is currently in full swing.
