BC, Vilnius, 17.04.2014.Print version
The European Commission (EC) approved of the initiative proposed by Lithuania and established an additional possibility to cover losses sustained by pig farmers due to preventive measures against African swine fever, informs LETA/ELTA.

By the decision of the EC, maximum rate of co-financing was set for Lithuania – 50 percent; as a result, Lithuania will be paid EUR 146,000.

This money will be allocated to cover losses sustained by pig farmers, who comply with biosecurity requirements and operate in the buffer zone, determined by the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT).

Under the decision of the VMVT, pig farmers in the buffer zone had to slaughter 14,500 pigs by 15 April. They will also be forbidden to raise pigs in this territory for at least a year to prevent the spreading of African swine fever.
