From 2016, owners of Lithuania's residential buildings to pay for waste collection

BC, Vilnius, 13.04.2014.Print version
From 2016, owners of all residential buildings (apartment blocks, own houses, gardener or other communities, owners of garages) will pay for municipal waste, informs LETA/ELTA.

The waste collection and management fee for real estate owners will be comprised of a constant and a variable part. The constant part of the fee, the monthly fee, will be designated for construction of plants, dumps, sites of bulky and green waste as well as maintenance of other infrastructure. At the same time, the variable part of the fee will depend on the amount of waste disposed.

"Landfilling, the ecologically unacceptable and inadequate form of waste management is the cheapest in theory. Still, it is clear that in order to sort and further recycle waste we have to build incineration plants and so on. Thus, the price grows substantially," said Minister of Environment Valentinas Mazuronis after a Government sitting this week.

According to the minister, the methodology approved by the Government last summer determined that waste collection and recycling fee will constitute up to 1 percent of yearly household income.
