EUR 3.2 mln deficit in Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital's budget

BC, Riga, 09.04.2014.Print version
During the past three years, 50,000 patients placed in Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital were unable to pay their bills, as a result the hospital has run up a deficit of EUR 3.2 million in its budget, as the hospital's head Viesturs Boka said during the Saeima Social and Employment Affairs Committee's meeting today, informs LETA.

The hospital cannot simply write off such an amount, and recovering patient payments is also very complicated, explained Boka. Part of these debts has been turned over to debt collectors.

One of the factors that makes collecting hospital payments more complicated is that many who leave the hospital are later applied such status that exempts them from hospital payments, added Boka.

Only in about 15% of all cases can the hospital payments be collected, he said.

The Health Ministry's State Secretary Rinalds Mucins said at the Saeima committee's meeting that there indeed was such a problem, but offered no solutions.

The committee members asked the Health Ministry to draw up a list of hospital debtors. It is possible that a repeat meeting of the committee will be held to consider the opportunities for covering the deficit in the hospital's budget.
