Pavluts: Aldaris basically shutting down in Latvia

BC, Riga, 11.09.2013.Print version
The perennial Latvian beer giant Aldaris is basically shutting down its production in Latvia, Economy Minister Daniels Pavluts pointed out in an interview on the LTV morning "Rita Panorama" broadcast, informs LETA/Nozare.lv.

As reported, Aldaris announced that it has decided to focus on producing exclusive top-quality and premium beer brands, therefore the company's PET production facility will be moved out of Latvia.

Pavluts believes that the company's explanations about upcoming changes are "nothing but smooth statements from a press release", emphasizing that what is happening in reality is that Aldaris is closing production in Latvia, "which is grim, and not in Latvia's interests."

According to the minister, the fact that there will be new beer brands produced in Latvia does not outweigh one of Latvia's oldest breweries shutting down its production.

Pavluts has also informed the Carlsberg Group, the owner of Aldaris, about his stance, but the company is not ready to change its mind.

"Aldaris, in response to the minister's comments, emphasizes in an interview with Nozare.lv that the brewery is not shutting down its production in Latvia.

"Aldaris will continue brewing beer in Latvia. As we have previously informed, following market trends, we have decided to invest several million euros in a growing market segment, a historic brewery, beginning to produce exclusive top-quality beer brands and moving our PET production facility to other Carlsberg breweries. We will continue brewing such popular beer brands as "Aldara Porteris, "Mezpils" and others at our brewery," explains Aldaris Communications Director Laura Krastina.
