Rinkevics warns about inefficient legal protection for Latvian companies abroad

BC, Riga, 19.06.2013.Print version
Legal protection for Latvian companies abroad has been one of the Foreign Ministry's greatest challenges lately and the ministry intends to pay additional attention to the matter in the future, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Reform Party) pointed out during the 2013 Export Forum organized by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia today, informs LETA/Nozare.lv.

There are several countries, especially to the East, where business activities seem easy, but many Latvian companies experience significant problems when legal proceedings are launched against them, explained the minister.

Recently, the Foreign Ministry has supported several Latvian companies and intervened in a number of legal proceedings abroad, which were far from generally accepted standards, said Rinkevics.

When entering such foreign markets, where the power of courts is not as transparent and "a phone call is above the law", Latvian businessmen must keep in mind these considerable risks, emphasized Rinkevics.

The Foreign Ministry will try to cooperate more actively with Latvian companies in this regard, added the minister.
