Since 2015 there will be no milk quota in the European Union (EU). Free, unregulated market scares milk producers, yet it is a promise of freedom to consumers, informs LETA/ELTA, referring to Respublika.

According to Andriejus Stancikas, Chief Executive of the Chamber of Agriculture, this could reduce the incomes of small and medium-sized dairy farms. Since the costs of production will not decrease, it will be more difficult for small and medium-sized diary farms to survive; they even might be hit by crisis.

"Quota can not be abolished while there are no market's regulatory mechanisms introduced that would protect milk producers against excessive shock. The dairy sector can be destroyed very quickly just as it happened to the flax sector. The state should also add to the protection of the dairy sector by granting support from the national budget so that small and medium-sized dairy farms could survive", said the chief executive of the Chamber of Agriculture.
