Latvian PM: merged public medium will be established by 2015

BC, Riga, 18.06.2013.Print version
Even though the ruling coalition has turned down the National Electronic Mass Media Council's concept on the establishment of a merged public medium, Prime Minister of Latvia Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) believes that the medium will be established by 2015, informs LETA.

The concept was halted due to All For Latvia-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK objections, the prime minister said in an interview with Latvian State Television this morning.

Dombrovskis sees no problems with politicians deciding on the medium, despite the fact that it is supposed to perform the function of a watchdog on Latvia's political arena.

As reported, to continue discussions on the new public medium concept, the ruling coalition will set up a Saeima subcommittee, Dombrovskis told reporters after the Coalition Council's session yesterday.

The subcommittee will try to find out how to proceed with the establishment of a merged public medium and reach an agreement.

However, due to the parliamentary recess, the matter will most likely not be reviewed this summer.
