The Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) turned to the President of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Jean-Paul Philippot, expressing concerns over the decision of the Greek government to close the state's public broadcasting company ERT, informs LETA.

ERR board chairman Margus Allikmaa stresses in the letter that ERT was closed on June 11 immediately and without a discussion of it in the parliament befitting a democratic state.

"This undemocratic and completely unprofessional decision of the Greek government destroys the most important principle and one of the principles that is the requirement for a democratic states, which is the independence of the public media from the government.

The Estonian Pubic Broadcasting supports compiling a joint statement by EBU member organisations and sending it to the Greek prime minister. The joint statement must firmly demand immediate restoration of the activities of ERT," says the letter.
