Every day, 130 children sustain injuries at home, school or outdoors and are taken to the hospital, points out Children's Surgical Clinic head and Riga Stradins University professor Aigars Petersons.
According to data from the Children's Clinical University Hospital, 16,263 children received medical assistance at the hospital in 2010, compared to 19,144 in 2011 and 19,706 in 2012.
This year's data will be even more
disheartening, notes Petersons. The demographic situation in Latvia is not
improving and many children and their parents leave the country to live abroad.
Approximately 19,000 children are born each year. Even though the birth rate reduces, the number of children taken to the Children's Clinical University Hospital continue to skyrocket, adds Petersons.
