Latvia and Turkmenistan can be proud of the fact that a more active political dialogue has increased interest in economic cooperation between both countries' businesspeople, Latvian President Andris Berzins pointed out during yesterday's official dinner hosted by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, informs LETA.

"This is confirmed by the large delegation of entrepreneurs accompanying me on this visit and the Latvian-Turkmen Business Forum that was held today," emphasized Berzins.

"I will be very interested in my visit to the city of Turkmenbashi. I welcome the fact that cooperation and development between our ports have been of particular importance in our dialogue," said the Latvian president. He also called upon Turkmenistan to view the matter not only in terms of experience and expertise exchanges, but also as an important element in the development of transit infrastructure.

"The geographical location of our countries, the interregional routes that are already functioning and the interest and support of leaders in other countries make us seriously consider the establishment of linked trade corridors between Latvian ports on the shores of the Baltic Sea to Turkmenbashi in the Caspian Sea and on to further eastern destinations," explained Berzins.

When it comes to regional cooperation, neutral Turkmenistan plays a major role in maintaining stability in Central Asia. As a European Union and NATO member state, Latvia very much welcomes mutually facilitating and supportive relations between Turkmenistan and these organizations. Among important issues on the international agenda, which, involve a serious partnership potential, are the stabilization of the situation in Afghanistan, the fight against the spread of narcotics and the diversification and security of the sources of energy resources, emphasized the Latvian president.

Berzins also invited young people from Turkmenistan to learn more about Latvia by choosing to study at Latvia's universities. He also expressed hope that the partnership between Jurmala and Avaza will prove to be a positive impulse in the development of both resort towns and increase interest among the people of Latvia and Turkmenistan to choose new travel and leisure destinations.

As reported, Berzins continues his official visit to Turkmenistan today, visiting the city of Turkmenbashi.
