Baltic countries sign agreement on joint procurement of ammunition for anti-tank guns

BC, Riga, 23.04.2013.Print version
The Baltic countries and European Defense Agency (EDA) today signed an agreement on procurement of ammunition for "Carl Gustav" anti-tank guns, as Defense Minister Artis Pabriks' Press Secretary Inga Saleniece told LETA.

The agreement may be joined by other countries, which means that, as the procurement amount increases, the price for the ammo will go down. The total cost of the procurement project is currently up to EUR 50 million for the three Baltic countries. Although it is unknown yet how much Latvia will allot for the project, it will clearly be several million lats.

EDA is planning to sign the agreement for a term of five years. The date of the first supplies is yet to be decided.

Pabriks says that this is a truly historic moment, proving that the Baltic countries' defense cooperation is recognized on the European Union level.

"Joint procurement was one of the key matters on the agenda of the Baltic defense ministers last year, and we have actually accomplished it," stressed Pabriks.

Although the Baltic countries jointly bought "Carl Gustav" ammunition already in 2007, this is the first time that the joint procurement is implemented via the EDA.
