Narva customs seize 125,000 contraband cigarettes
The first vehicle attempted to smuggle 76,120 cigarettes, and another vehicle carried 48,640 undeclared cigarettes.
Ants Kutti, acting head of the Customs Organization Department, said vehicles with purpose-built caches for contraband have been discovered more often in recent times.
As reported, an estimated 44 million euros of tobacco excise tax was not paid to Estonian state and 10.5 million euros was alcohol excise tax was missing due to illegal trade with these goods subject to paying excise tax.
Estonian Tax and Customs Board announced this year has intensified the control in customs checkpoints over tobacco products that people crossing the state border have with them.
TCB customs management department head Urmas Koidu said that reducing the share of illegal tobacco products has always been important for the board and this year it is one firm priority that will get more resources than before.
