Direct payments should be reduced to farmers in all European Union member states, Danish Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal said at a joint press conference with his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevics (Reform Party) in Riga today.

At the moment, too much money is spent on agriculture, said Sovndal, adding that free competition was needed in the agricultural sector. However, as long as the EU continues to pay direct payments, they should at least be fair, said Sovndal.

The talks on the direct payments will take a long time and may be very hard, predicted the Danish minister, informs LETA.

Rinkevics made it clear that Latvia and Denmark's positions on direct payments differed. "The talks will continue for at least three months," said the minister, adding that, during the meeting with Sovndal today, he tried to explain Latvia's position on direct payments to farmers and on the cohesion policy.

The EU member states may have various opinions, however, "if we compare where we started at a year ago and where we are now, we have come a long way also toward mutual understanding. The talks will continue," said the Latvian minister.
