This morning, European Parliament President Martin Schulz received a joint petition signed by Baltic farmers, demanding fairer direct area payments, and promised "a special approach" to solving this issue, Nozare.lv was informed by Agricultural Organizations' Cooperation Council board member Armands Krauze.

Martin Schulz.

"We have just submitted our petition to the EP president. He said that the issue of direct payments requires a special approach to the Baltic States and must be solved in the nearest future," said Krauze.

Today, Baltic farmers and agricultural organizations' representatives will also meet with EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Dacian Ciolos' office representatives and hold a peaceful protest near the EP building, writes LETA.

Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) and Agriculture Minister Laimdota Straujuma will also visit the rally.

As reported, Latvia wants Brussels to introduce fair direct payments to farmers, stipulating that the lowest payments must constitute at least 80 percent of the average amount of the EU direct payments. At the moment, Latvian farmers receive the smallest direct payments in the EU, LVL 63 per hectare or less, while the average figure in Europe is EUR 266 or LVL 186 per hectare.
