Print versionLatvia wants to achieve 80% of the average level of EU direct payments for its farmers, Agriculture Minister Laimdota Straujuma said in an interview with the LNT morning show "900 sekundes" today.

At the moment, Latvian farmers receive 54% of the average figure or EUR 144 per hectare. "We want our farmers to receive EUR 214 per hectare," emphasized the minister and added that such a figure is realistic, writes LETA.
Asked about the Agriculture Ministry's potential actions in case the plan fails, Straujuma explained that she does not allow for such possibility. "European ministers are overall comprehending the situation in the Baltic States," said the minister.
As reported, fair direct payments are among Latvian farmers' priorities in the EU's multi-annual budget for 2014-2020, according to a study carried out by the Agriculture Ministry.
