Cigarette smuggling at Estonian Eastern border surges in 2011

Attempts to smuggle cigarettes across border to Estonia illegally have increased considerably in 2011, LETA/National Broadcasting cites Tax and Customs Board data.

Tax and Customs Board customs management department head Urmas Järg said that in the first six months of this year, the board has discovered around 10 million illegal cigarettes. “Last year during the whole year around 10 million illegal cigarettes were discovered,” he said.

 

“There are around 250-300 cases of smuggling of goods a month across all border checkpoints, There are around 10 more serious cases a day,” said Järg.

 

Järg said that illegal goods are often hidden in constructions of vehicles but have been discovered also inside cakes, milk or juice packs.
