From June 2, 2010, all beverages packaged in metal containers will be sold with the package deposit tax of 1 kroon and this amount will be paid for each returned container as well, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht writes.

The managing director of Eesti Pandipakend Rauno Peeter Raal noted that the objective of the move was to motivate consumers to act more environmentally consciously and create financial motivation for consumers to return the packages instead of throwing them into nature. “50 sents and 1 kroon – there is a difference already,” said Raal.

Raal said that the reason for raising the deposit tax is also the packaging law, according to which the minimal metal containers return rate has been raised to 50%.

Last year 55% of tin cans of beverages were returned. Eesti Pandipakend hopes that raising the deposit tax of them from 50 sents to 1 kroon increases the return rate by around 10%.

The return rate of plastic beverage containers was at the same time 89% and glass containers 85%.

Raal added that the return rate of metal containers is lower also because foreigners prefer to take canned beer out of Estonia with them.
