Scrap metal helps the poorest in Lithuania to survive

Danuta Pavilenene, BC, Vilnius, 13.04.2010.Print version
Lithuanian people, striving with poverty and doing the utmost to make ends meet, make for living by digging out scrap metal buried by factory workers during Soviet times, LETA/Alfa.lt reported, referring to daily Lietuvos Rytas (The Lithuanian Morning).

Homeless and unemployed people earn up to 100 litas a day from such occupation.

Pieces of scrap iron found not far from the river in Vilnius are being sold by the box as homeless people struggle to find income in Lithuania during the crisis.

Diggers told journalists that they were at first digging up useful machine parts, but now just find pieces of scrap iron.

One box of scrap metal can earn around 11 litas for the workers, who don't interrupt their work except for rainy days.
