The telephone company Lattelecom announced today that its is prepared to provide decoders for 70,000 households in financial need and cut the subscription fee for five national channels by 25%, if the government extends digital broadcasting rights to the company till end-2018.The announcement was made to the press today by Lattelecom CEO Juris Gulbis.

At this time, the company has rights until 2013.

Gulbis added that this move must have legal grounds, i.e. a system set up to determine exactly which households qualify. The could be done by a Saeima vote, thereby saving the government LVL 3.5 million necessary for subsidizing access to television for the needy, informs LETA.

The standard cost for a decoder from Lattelecom – necessary to receive the new digital signal – is LVL 39.
