Lithuanian public TV channel launches broadcasts in Poland's Suwalki region

BC, Vilnius, 20.08.2020.Print version
LRT Lituanica, the Lithuanian public broadcaster's TV channel targeting the Lithuanian diaspora, has started broadcasting its programs in Suwalki, Poland's northeastern region with a large ethnic Lithuanian population

The official launch ceremony for free-to-air terrestrial broadcasts in Suwalki took place at the Vilnius TV Tower on Thursday.

Until recently, LRT Television was only available to viewers in the border area.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said it had taken a lot of time and efforts to launch LRT Lituanica broadcasts in Suwalki.

"It will be another bridge not only between our communities, Lithuanians living in Poland and in Lithuania, but also between the states, Lithuania and Poland," he said at the ceremony.

The project was implemented in cooperation with the Polish government, Skvernelis said.

Other projects in Suwalki – a Lithuanian culture center and a Lithuanian-language kindergarten – are also nearing completion, he noted.

The local community hopes that the kindergarten, which is opening in September, will grow into a school as an increasing number of families are moving into the region which is now home to over 1,000 ethnic Lithuanians.

LRT Lituanica was launched in 2007 under the name of LTV World to help the Lithuanian diaspora to stay in touch with the country. The channel is broadcasting Lithuanian content around the clock.
