The development of the Adazi military base near Riga will continue also in the future, Latvian Chief of Defense Leonids Kalnins told LETA.

Today, Kalnins and Defense Minister Artis Pabriks (For Development/For) participated in the opening of two new barracks built in Adazi to house Latvian and allied troops.

Kalnins told LETA that construction of new army barracks will continue also in the future as this is one of the Latvian defense sector's priorities.

The development of the Adazi base will continue, Kalnins said without elaborating on the projects.

At present, work is under way to improve the existing infrastructure at the military base, Kalnins said, adding that a swimming pool might also be constructed sometime in the future in order to provide exercise opportunities to the allied soldiers stationed in Adazi.

The chief of defense indicated that it is necessary to develop the infrastructure of Multinational Division Headquarters North, which is currently is using temporary premises but needs proper infrastructure to perform its functions.

Construction and furbishing of the two new barracks at the Adazi base cost EUR 15.5 mln. Around EUR 4.8 mln of the project's costs were paid by money provided by the NATO Security Investment Program (NSIP).

Each barrack has storerooms for keeping equipment, classrooms, offices, sanitary facilities and accommodation premises. Each barrack can house up to 450 troops.
