BC, Riga, 18.06.2020.Print version
The Saeima today appointed Juris Stukans, a judge at Riga Regional Court and chairman of the court's judicial panel for criminal cases, as Latvia's next prosecutor general, reported LETA.

The decision was supported by all present 92 lawmakers, there were no votes against and no abstentions.

Inese Voika (For Development) said before the vote that Stukans has been convincing in his vision about the necessary changes. She also commended the open tender that was held for the prosecutor general for the first time, ensuring a transparent and tough competition for the post.

Andrejs Judins (New Unity) said that the New Unity's parliament group has already received all necessary answers from Stukans and he has the coalition support.

Also, Regina Locmele-Lunova (Harmony) said that Stukans' plan for improving the quality of prosecution seems hopeful.

The Saeima legal committee earlier unanimously supported the decision on appointing Stukans as the prosecutor general.

Stukans was nominated for the post by the Judicial Council.

Stukans, 48, is himself a member of the Judicial Council, but as the council met today to select the best candidate for prosecutor general, Stukans said he would not participate in hearing and voting on the candidates.

Previously, Stukans has worked at the Interior Ministry's information center and the criminal and procedural law section of the Justice Ministry's Public Law Department.

He has also worked as a judge and deputy chief judge at the Riga City Zemgale District Court, as well as acting chief judge of Riga Regional Court.

Term of the office of incumbent Prosecutor General Eriks Kalnmeiers expires on July 11.
