Print versionDespite regular inspections, carried out by the State Revenue Service (SRS), merchants at the Riga Central Market continue to trespass laws and evade paying taxes, thus causing losses both to the budget of the local government of Riga and the national budget. SRS has come to such a conclusion after nearly 500 inspections carrying out over a period of one year and recording the established breaches and imposed penalties.

As LETA learned from the SRS Communications Department, over the last year, 404 merchants at the Riga Central Market were found to have made breaches; altogether they paid LVL 14,800 in fines.
SRS has concluded that despite regular inspections, the situation is not improving, merchants at the Riga Central Market continue to disobey the legal regulations. For example, on July 1 SRS confiscated over one ton of fruits and vegetables from 11 market stalls due to lack of necessary documentation, most of the confiscated fruit were apricots, melons, watermelons, strawberries and bell peppers.
