Healthcare workers' salaries will be raised 20 percent as of January 1 next year, the government agreed, reported LETA.

The Cabinet of Ministers supported the Health Ministry's amendments to the rules on the lowest wages and bonuses paid to healthcare personnel, which are necessary to increase the lowest salaries in healthcare by 20%.

The lowest salaries will be increased for all healthcare personnel groups - physicians and specialists, nurses, and auxiliary staff.

According to the amendments, the lowest monthly salaries of certified specialists and dentists will be increased from EUR 899 now to EUR 1,079 on January 1. In the meantime, the lowest wages paid to nurses and assistant physicians will be increased from EUR 595 to EUR 714.

Family physicians' capitation will also be raised 20% per patient.

According to the Health Ministry, increasing salaries in the coming years is one of the most important measures to solve problems with labor shortages in healthcare. Personnel ageing and low remuneration in healthcare are the main reasons why there are increasingly more vacancies in hospitals and in healthcare sector in general.

According to the Health Ministry, solving the problem of labor shortages in healthcare will require a total of EUR 500.8 million by 2023.
