Two-fold increase in the number of forest fires registered in 2018 in Latvia

Print versionAccording to information from the State Forestry Service, over 900 forest fires have been registered in Latvia this year, which was an almost two-fold increase from the previous year, reported LETA.

A total of 2,863 hectares was damaged by fires this year,
which was 6.8 times more when compared to the previous year.
The Forestry Service points out that several major forest
fires broke out this past summer, which needed substantial human and financial
resources to put out.
The substantial increase in the number of forest fires this
year was due to the dry summer, the Forestry Service points out.
