Latvia and Peru agree to expand business, educational and science cooperation

Latvia and Peru have agreed to expand business, educational and science cooperation, LETA was told at the Latvian Foreign Ministry.

Foreign Ministry State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovics met with Peru’s non-resident Ambassador to Latvia Thierry Roca-Rey Deladrier, who had arrived in Riga for an accreditation visit.


Pildegovics noted the friendly bilateral relations between Latvia and Peru and also their cooperation in international organizations. The diplomats agreed to enhance the legal framework and intensify mutual contacts to provide support for businesses in Latvia and Peru.


Trade, information and communication technologies, biotechnologies, forestry, transit and logistics were named as the priority sectors for cooperation. The ambassador confirmed that Peru was interested in expanding contacts in education and science.


The state secretary and the ambassador praised the good relationship between the EU and Peru and its positive development following the conclusion of the EU-Peru Trade Agreement. State Secretary Pildegovics voiced support for the priority set by the Peruvian government – the country’s accession to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).


In the run-up to the EU-CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Ministerial Meeting in Brussels, Belgium, slated for July 16-17, the importance of the EU and CELAC strategic partnership was underlined in seeking joint solutions to global issues, for instance, strengthening of democracy, sustainable development, climate change, migration, and combating crime.


On June 19, Ambassador Thierry Roca-Rey Deladrier presented his credentials to the President of Latvia, Raimonds Vejonis, and met with the Secretary of the Saeima, Andrejs Klementjevs, as well as the Foreign Ministry officials.


The ambassador of Peru resides in Helsinki, Finland.
