Drought cuts milk purchase prices in Lithuania in May

BC, Vilnius, 15.06.2018.Print version
Milk purchase prices in Lithuania dropped in May 2018, from April when they rose for a fifth month in a row. Egidijus Simonis, director of milk processors' associations Pieno Centras, says prices dropped due to a drought, informs LETA/BNS.

"Unusually warm weather this spring further reduced the level of protein and fat in milk. And their levels are one of the key rates in the raw milk pricing," Simonis said in a statement.

Rising milk productions at small farms was also behind a drip in purchase prices.

Looking ahead, he said changes in milk purchase prices will depend on the demand of Lithuanian products in export markets.

The average milk purchase price in May stood at 259.7 euros per ton, down 3.2% from April and down 3% from May, 2017. The average base rate price inched down 0.9% to 220.3 euros over a month, the Ministry of Agriculture said.

126,430 tons of milk were purchased in Lithuania last month, up 5% from the same month last year.
