The share of healthcare expenses in Estonia's gross domestic product amounted to 6.7% in 2016, while a year before the share was 6.5%, it can be seen from data published by the National Institute for Health Development, cites LETA/BNS.

As of 2012 the growth of healthcare expenditure has been faster than GDP growth, the institute said. In 2016 Estonia's healthcare costs totaled 1.4 million euros which is 7% more than in 2015.

The fastest expenditure growth continued in day care, totaling 13%, and in nursing care with 11%. In ambulatory care the expenditure totaled 7%, while the expenditure of hospital care and rehabilitation increased only 2%.

The share of healthcare costs that households had to pay themselves totaled 22.6% in 2016, which is the same as in 2013-2015.
