State Environmental Service fines Nordic Recycling, Latvijas Zalais Elektrons, terminates agreements

BC, Riga, 05.10.2017.Print version
The State Environmental Service from December 31 will terminate waste management agreements with Nordic Recycling and Latvijas Zalais Elektrons companies, and has decided to impose fines worth EUR 8.3 million and EUR 13.7 million on the companies respectively for failure to meet the agreement terms, said the service’s general director Inga Kolegova in a press briefing on October 4th, cites LETA.

The State Environmental Service said that Nordic Recycling has not ensured waste recycling to the agreed volumes – the company has not recycled 62.5% of glass, 29% of wooden packaging and 2.5% of paper packaging. The fine has been calculated at EUR 8.3 million.

Latvijas Zalais Elektrons has been fined with EUR 12.5 million for failing to recycle household waste – the company has failed to recycle 29% of the agreed volume. At the same time, the company has failed to recycle also large amounts of hazardous waste – used car tires, batteries, and has been fined with EUR 1.2 million for this. Thus, the total fine amounts to EUR 13.7 million.

As reported, last month the Environmental Service slapped a EUR 12.9 million fine on Riepu Bloki company that had been storing in Riga huge amounts of used tires well above the permitted limit. The service also terminated agreement with the company, thus kicking it out of the hazardous waste management system, which means that the company and its cooperation partners will no longer be eligible to the relevant tax rebate.
