About 800 medics refuse to work extended working hours in Latvia
BC, Riga, 03.07.2017.Print version
Demanding improvements for healthcare workers, approximately 800 medics in Latvia are refusing to work extended working hours from July 1, 2017 as a warning campaign informs LETA.
The warning campaign will last a month.
The Latvian Health and Social Care Workers' Trade Union (LVSADA) points out
that such a decision has been made because the adopted amendments do not ensure
the improvement planned by the trade union for people who work extended regular
hours.
LVSADA head Valdis Keris said that the campaign will most likely lead to
patients waiting longer to receive healthcare services.
Keris added that politicians are completely responsible for this situation.
As reported, the Latvian parliament on June 8 passed in the final reading
legislative amendments that will phase out the so-called extended regular
working hours for medical personnel which essentially is unpaid overtime.
