The Latvian Nurses Association will also join the strike called by the Latvian Association of Family Physicians by suspending work until a deal is reached with the Health Ministry, Dita Raiska, the head of the nurses’ association, told LETA.

She said that the association supports the family physicians’ action because low pay is becoming an increasing pressing problem for general practitioners.

“We are thankful to the family physicians’ support for this team and their understanding that something can only be achieved by strengthening the finances of their subordinates,” said Raiska.

As reported, Sarmite Veide, president of the Latvian Association of Family Physicians, told LETA earlier that medics had decided to go on strike on July 3 after the Health Ministry rejected the association’s proposal to form a reconciliation commission. The medics would stop working until an agreement is reached with the ministry.

Liga Kozlovska, president of the Latvian Association of Rural Family Physicians, told LETA that her organization would also join the medics’ strike in July.

The Health Ministry, meanwhile, maintains it remains open to negotiations. The ministry has invited the Latvian Association of Family Physicians to talks next week to discuss the medics’ demands, said the ministry’s representative Oskars Sneiders.
