Estonia's ice cream output declining year after year

BC, Tallinn, 14.06.2017.Print version
The production of ice cream in Estonia has been on a downtrend since 2010, with output falling from 11,000 tons in that year to approximately 8,700 tons in 2016, reports LETA/BNS.

Of the 8,700 or so tons of ice cream produced in Estonia during last year almost half was exported. The import of ice cream to Estonia totaled 2,400 tons.

The export of ice cream peaks in the three summer months of June, July and August, when 40 percent of the total amount of ice cream exported from Estonia during a year is exported, Evelin Puura, lead statistician-methodologist at Statistics Estonia, said in the blog of Statistics Estonia.

In 2016, ice cream made in Estonia was exported to 13 countries in four continents. Of the exports 97% went to the other Baltic countries and Finland.

The ice cream imported to Estonia mainly comes from Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and, since 2013, also from Poland. Ice cream is imported to Estonia from 14 countries across Europe.

Based on the statistics for output and exports and imports, it can be concluded that Estonian residents mainly eat locally made ice cream and they eat some 5.5 kilograms of ice cream every year.
