Increasingly more Latvian companies considering hiring third-country workers

Increasingly more Latvian businessmen have to consider hiring third-country workers, the State Employment Agency's Director Evita Simsone told Latvian Radio this morning, citing LETA.

According to the Citizenship and Migration Affairs Office's data, Latvian companies employed 1,161 third-country citizens last year, said Simsone.


The main industries employing foreign workers include transport, information technology and construction. Programmers, truck drivers and cooks are in the greatest demand, added Simsone.


She said though that third-country nationals were not being hired in large numbers. The Employment Agency continues to work with Latvia's unemployed to individually help each of them find a job.


The registered unemployment rate in Latvia this past January was 8.5% At the beginning of January, there were 78,357 unemployed persons registered with the Employment Service, but the figure rose to 80 106 by the end of January.
