Coop may close 6 stores in South Estonia due to border trade

BC, Tallinn, 15.02.2017.Print version
The retail chain Coop Eesti may decide in March to close up to six stores in South Estonia that are suffering from the impact of cross-border trade, the news portal of public broadcaster ERR said.

A meeting is about to take place at Coop in mid-March where the fate of six South Estonian stores will be discussed, among other things. Specifically, ways will be sought how to keep the stores in operation in a situation where cross-border trade is cutting into their turnovers.

The main problem related to small stores of South Estonia is that once people have decided to go to Latvia to buy cheaper alcohol, they will buy also other items aside from alcohol there, Coop Eesti spokesman Martin Miido told ERR.
