Latvian State Television (LTV) could stop broadcasting if it is assigned to cut budget spending by another 40%, the newspaper Telegraf reports today.

Deputy Director General of the LTV Arnis Kupriss notified in an interview to the newspaper that such budget cuts would result in closing down both state television channels – the LTV1 and the LTV7.

As he comments, with funding reduced by another 40%, the television could only broadcast for half an hour per day, writes LETA.

Kupriss admitted that so far the Ministry of Finance has only demanded the LTV to prepare a report on what consequences would budget reduction have, it has not yet announced that the spending will indeed have to be curbed to such an extent.

Today, representatives of the European Broadcasting Union, the Latvian National Broadcasting Council and heads of the Latvian State Television and the Latvian State Radio will meet with the Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (New Era), as LETA learned from the Latvian State Radio's press secretary Ilze Vasermane.

Discussion with the prime minister will focus on issues, concerning future perspectives of the Latvian State Radio and the LTV.
