Latvian Economics Minister Arvils Aseradens (Unity) has suggested that certain business-related public services should be provided in the English language in order to improve business environment in the country, reports LETA.

Today Aseradens participated in a discussion about the shadow economy and its effects on the Latvian economy organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Latvia, the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga and Cemex company and presented the proposals included in the Business Environment Improvement Plan that is to be put before the Cabinet of Ministers soon.

The plan lists several priorities, including creation of a strong legislative framework to tackle the problems in relation to the insolvency proceedings, the shadow economy and the fight against economic crimes.

It is also planned to introduce customer-oriented services, to facilitate digitalization of public services and to develop e-governance.

One of the priorities is to increase openness of business environment by providing services to business representatives in English. The economics minister said that the State Revenue Service and the Enterprise Register could provide certain services to business representatives in the English language.

The Economic Council in December 2016 approved the measures included in the Business Environment Improvement Plan that was created in cooperation with the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Latvian Confederation of Employers, the Foreign Investors' Council in Latvia, the Latvian Association of Local Governments and other stakeholders. The plan lists 53 measures to be implemented in a year or two based on the recommendations by social partners, cooperation partners and government agencies as well as findings of international surveys such as the World Bank's Doing Business, the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Report etc.
