Peteris Karlis Elferts has presented his letters of credence to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, thereby taking office as Latvian Ambassador to Turkey, the Foreign Ministry informed.

In a conversation with the Turkish president, the ambassador highlighted the close bilateral relations between both countries and a regular exchange of visits by senior officials, as well as the important transatlantic link and issues in Turkey's cooperation with the European Union, the ministry said.

Erdogan and Elferts commended the achievements in the current Latvian-Turkish cooperation and agreed that mutual trade and tourism still offer a considerable potential for growth. Both officials made note of this month marking the 25th anniversary since diplomatic relations were re-established between Latvia and Turkey.

Turkey is an important partner country for Latvia. Both countries engage in active and diverse bilateral cooperation in culture, education, defence and security. Latvia highly appreciates cooperation with Turkey as an ally in NATO and the fact that Turkey has never recognised the occupation of Latvia.
