Lithuanian dairy farmers to get another EUR 17.2 mln

BC, Vilnius, 16.06.2016.Print version
Lithuania's government decided on June 15th to pay another 17.2 million euros in support to the dairy farmers affected by the global dairy crisis in late June through early July 2016. The money will be paid to more than 30,000 milk producers, informs LETA/BNS.

"This will help trim the damages incurred by the milk producers amid the declining prices," Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said via his spokeswoman.

Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitiene said the sum would be deducted from the 33.9 illion euros of national support envisaged to dairy farmers for this year.

"We are moving the national support of the transitional period to an earlier date, as under all legal acts, we should be paying the money for 2016 at the beginning of next year. (...) We have approved the full envelope of 33.9 million euros, and will pay 17.2 million euros to the dairy sector this year. The money should be paid in the last week of June," Baltraitiene told journalists after the government's meeting. In her words, farmers should receive 15 euros per a ton of milk.

In her words, milk prices are expected to stabilize in July.

Lithuanian dairy farmers already received 18 million euros in national support in May and early June.
