Lithuanian LRT fined for prohibited ads

BC, Vilnius, 07.06.2016.Print version
Lithuania's national radio and television LRT will have to pay a fine for broadcasting prohibited commercial ads, the Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission decided. LRT CEO does not rule out taking the decision to court, informs LETA/BNS.

"We have decided that violations have been committed. A protocol decision was made to sign a protocol of violation of administrative law," Edmundas Vaitekunas, chairman of the watchdog commission, told BNS Lithuania on Tuesday.

In his words, the fine may range between about 200 and 800 euros, however, may be half of the minimum fine, if the LRT agrees to goodwill payment.

LRT has the right to indicate sponsors of broadcasts, however, cannot advertize them, said Vaitekunas.

LRT CEO Audrius Siaurusevicius said the LRT might appeal against the commission's decision, with the final decision to be made following analysis of the argumentation.

Commercial advertisement in LRT broadcasts has been banned since January of 2015 after the national broadcaster is financed from the state budget only. The ban does not apply to the news portal LRT.lt and announcements of cultural and sports events, as well as their broadcasts.
