Government could allot EUR 6 mln in extraordinary aid to Latvian dairy farms

BC, Riga, 18.05.2016.Print version
Due to the continuing crisis in the dairy farming sector, decreasing milk prices and overproduction in Latvia, all of which has caused concerns about a wave of bankruptcies, EUR 6 million will be allotted from the state budget in the near future to help dairy farmers survive the crisis.

According to unofficial information acquired by LETA, the proposal will be discussed at several ministerial meetings this week, and the legislation could be submitted in the government in the near future.

If the funds are allotted from the budget, they will be distributed among all farmers who keep dairy cows. Talks continue still about the relevant criteria.

Several farmers told LETA that the extraordinary aid was achieved thanks to non-governmental organizations' pressure on the government. It would be extremely important in the current situation, especially taking into account that Latvian farmers will most probably receive no aid from the European Union this summer.

According to official statistics, there are approximately 21,800 dairy farms in Latvia, and the total number of dairy cows in Latvia was 161,932 this past April.
