Vilnius court upholds watchdog's decision to ban part of NTV Mir content

BC, Vilnius, 10.05.2016.Print version
A Vilnius court has dismissed an appeal filed by almost 30 Lithuanian re-broadcasters against the media watchdog's decision to ban only Russia-produced content of the Russian-language TV channel NTV Mir Lithuania, informs LETA/BNS.

The re-broadcasters said in their appeal that the ban on a part of content, imposed two years ago, could not "be objectively implemented" as they could not interfere with the content of a TV channel.

They criticized the Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission (LRTK) for failing to tell them how to implement the decision.

"The court found that the sanction imposed by the commission was lawful and justified and, therefore, (...) dismissed the appeal as unfounded," Sigita Jacineviciene-Baltaduone, spokeswoman for the Vilnius Regional Administrative Court, told BNS

The LRTK in March 2014 found that the channel had aired a documentary spreading lies about the Jan. 13, 1990 events in Lithuania and imposed a three-month ban on rebroadcasts of its content produced in Russia.

The watchdog has also imposed similar court-approved bans on rebroadcasts of other Russian-language channels –-Ren TV Baltic, First Baltic Channel (PBK) and RTR Planeta.
