Latvian broadcasting watchdog wants to punish Rossiya RTR TV channel

BC, Riga, 26.04.2016.Print version
The Latvian National Electronic Mass Media Council by deciding to impose a six-month ban on Russian television channel Rossiya RTR in Latvia's territory does not want to achieve that the TV channel is not watched in Latvia, but that the TV channel is punished for its violations, said the broadcasting watchdog’s chairman Aija Dulevska, informs LETA.

Dulevska said that Rossiya RTR is not registered in Latvia, and, according to the EU laws, the only serious restriction is a ban of its broadcast in the country.

"The TV channels registered in Latvia are being monitored, their violations are registered and fined, but none of them has been blocked due to violations,” said Dulevska, adding that what the watchdog is doing is not censorship.

She also said that the watchdog has proposed to register the Russian TV channel in Latvia to ease communication, but this proposal has been rejected.

The Latvian broadcasting watchdog, the National Electronic Mass Media Council said on April 12 decided to restrict the rebroadcast of Russian television channel Rossiya RTR in Latvia for a period of six months. The council pointed out that it had observed repeated gross violations in Rossiya RTR broadcasts in 2015, which breached both Latvian and EU regulations.
