KVV Liepajas Metalurgs metallurgical company will start laying off workers today, as Dace Baumane, head of the Liepaja branch of the State Employment Agency, told LETA.

On March 21, KVV Liepajas Metalurgs informed the Employment Agency that it was planning to fire around 300 employees starting April 25. Part of KVV Liepajas Metalurgs workers chose not to wait until April 25 and registered as unemployed with the Employment Agency.

There is no information available at the moment on how successful these people have been in finding new jobs. According to Baumane, their priority at the moment is to settle all formalities so they could start receiving unemployment benefits. Registered unemployment rate in Liepaja was 12.3 percent last week.

At the moment, the Employment Agency has 290 vacancies to offer to job seekers in Liepaja. These include jobs at industrial enterprises, in construction and road construction, there also are several vacancies for truck drivers. Released from KVV Liepajas Metalurgs will be not just welders, but also electricians, accountants, drivers and others, so many of them will be able to find a new job, Baumane said previously.
