Lithuania’s EcoMin: exporters have refocused towards Western markets successfully

BC, Vilnius, 09.02.2016.Print version
With macroeconomic situation in Russia and other CIS countries getting worse, external environment was not favorable for Lithuania’s exporters in 2015. Even so, they continue to refocus successfully and gain a foothold in new Western markets, Economy Minister has said, cites LETA/BNS.

“Exports of goods manufactured in Lithuania, not including petroleum products, avoided a decline last year and rose by several%age points instead. These exports are extremely important for Lithuania in particular as each euro of exports of Lithuanian-origin goods brings in 0.58 euros in added value whereas the respective indicator for re-exports amounts to meager 0.09 euros. As far as the categories of goods of Lithuanian origin are concerned, the fastest growth was recorded in exports of furniture, fertilizers and plant products,” Evaldas Gustas said in comments sent to BNS.

As measured in terms of volume, Lithuania’s exports remained broadly unchanged last year as compared to 2014, he said, adding that a decline in value terms had mainly been triggered by a slump in prices for petroleum products.

Lithuania's exports fell by 5.7% in 2015 compared with a year before, data from Statistics Lithuania showed on Tuesday. Excluding mineral products, the country’s exports decreased by 4.3% last year.

Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin dropped by 2.4%, as compared to 2014. Excluding mineral products, these exports rose by 2.7%.

The key foreign markets for goods of Lithuanian origin included Germany (10.6% of these exports), Latvia (7.9%), the United States (7.3%), Poland (6.7%) and the United Kingdom (6.6%).
