The number of buyers from Belarus claiming a tax refund on purchases made in Lithuania last year fell by nearly 11% and the number of such buyers from Russia plummeted by 43%, the Verslo Zinios business daily reports on Friday, adding that clothes retailers and resort businesses have been hardest hit by the decline in buyers from these countries, cites LETA/BNS.

“The main reason why Apranga last year failed to reach its sales growth target was a sharp decline in the flow of buyers from CIS countries and in their expenditure,” Rimantas Perveneckas, CEO of Lithuania’s largest clothes retailer, told the daily.

As estimated by Baltika Lietuva, the total flow of buyers from outside the EU fell by 23% in 2015. In particular, the number of buyers from Belarus decreased by 18% and from Russia – by 44%, the company’s CEO, Viktorija Krolyte, told the daily, adding that the rates of decline had been the highest early last year and in December.
