Lithuanian businesses see no threats in Poland

Amid warnings that Poland may become "a second Russia" for Lithuanian exporters, Lithuanian companies say that they do not see such threats, the business daily Verslo Zinios reported on Wednesday, cites LETA/BNS.

Nerijus Maciulis, chief economist at Swedbank Lithuania, has warned recently that financial markets are already worried about the new Polish government's policies and that the neighboring country may become a second Russia for Lithuanian businesses.

"It is not as if we check exchange rates every day. There is certainly a risk of the purchasing power declining, but we do not see that, at least for now," Vaida Budriene, head of corporate affairs at the alcoholic beverage production and distribution group MV Group, told the paper.

"This market is heavily regulated in Poland. For example, alcohol advertising is completely banned. They have a fairly well-establish regulation and we do not expect any political changes in this area," she said.

Giedrius Bagusinskas, director of the Lithuanian Food Exporters' Association, said that "many companies do not see themselves in Poland, at least for now, because of (low) prices, but they import a lot of raw materials from that country."

Svajunas Sipavicius, CEO of the dairy Varenos Pienelis, said that the weak zloty would affect not only Lithuanian exporters, but also those competing in the domestic market.
