According to the Estonian Ministry of Rural Affairs the genetically modified (GM) salmon created by U.S. company AquaBounty Technologies which grows twice as fast as regular salmon will not be imported to Estonia, while the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service has said that the GM Atlantic salmon is safe and nutritious, informs LETA.

"In Estonia only such GM products can be marketed that are allowed to be marketed in the European Union," chief specialist at the ministry Kulli Johanson told BNS. She added that salmon is not one of those products.

"Compared to the rest of the world the European Union has the strictest system of allowing GMOs to the market," Johanson said.

AquaBounty Technologies launched its modified salmon project about 20 years ago. Since 2010 the US Food and Drug Administration has been saying that the GM salmon is safe.
