Latvian president returns Electronic Mass Media Law amendments to Saeima

BC, Riga, 09.11.2015.Print version
President of Latvia Raimons Vejonis has not promulgated amendments to the Electronic Mass Media Law that Saeima passed on October 29, informs LETA.

The amendments stipulated transition to one language used in a radio station's transmission time, either Latvian or a foreign language.

The President's Press Service informs that the amendments have not been promulgated in accordance with the good governance principle and with the aim not to rush legislation that is important to society and the State of Latvia. Therefore, the president will return the bill to Saeima for a repeated review, noting that Saeima has not properly evaluated the impact that the legislation may have.

The geopolitical situation in Latvia calls for restricting foreign broadcasters' effect on Latvia's society. State policy on the state language and use of foreign languages in electronic mass media has to be clear and comprehensible. Saeima has to find solutions that are in interests of the State of Latvia and society, the president said.

Previously the Regional Alliance of Latvia requested Vejonis not to promulgate the amendments that, it said, would limit the amount of Latvian language in radio stations' transmission time.
